  • They DO exist! (And so do I!)

I give up on trying to get myself to post.  I just feel like whenever I am home I have to be doing something "productive" like cleaning or working on a project.  It's really boring and not-fun =P  So here is a recap of the last two months in random order and with lots of pictures.

Last week I tore myself away from chores to meet some eFriends (technically Internet Strangers, but I was brave!) - Ryan and Diana.  They were visiting DC so Carlos and I went downtown to meet them and visit the American History Museum (and get completely soaked and lead them on a wild goose chase to find food).  Proof that we all exist:

The rain was not nice to my hair hahaha.

Ryan also took pictures to prove that I exist.

Proof that the DC Metro system exists!

It poured rain from then until this weekend, what a mess.

On April 29 it was our 10th dating anniversary.  We went out to a restaurant in Bethesda, and I wore a dress even though it was cold.

I guess we have grown up a little...

The weekend before our anniversary we went out to the Shenandoah.  We did three good but hard-for-Kate hikes: Stony Man and Corbin Cabin on Saturday (we did Corbin Cabin in the opposite direction from what they suggest on that site - that was dumb) and then White Oak Canyon on Sunday.  I stupidly left the battery for my camera in the hotel room when I meant to take nice pictures of us at sunset, but at least I had it the rest of the time:

A puddle miraculously shaped like India!!

Corbin Cabin, which you can rent from the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club (if you don't mind mice and no running water).

The front yard of Corbin Cabin.  The mice might be worth it.

Playing with shutter speed at the top of the upper White Oak Canyon falls.

    Stereotypical Shenandoah picture.

    Bird list for Shenandoah:
    • Eastern Towhee (lots)
    • American Redstart (bushels)
    • Turkey Vulture
    • Blue-headed vireo (lifer!)
    • Hooded Warbler
    • Blackburnian Warbler (kind of a lifer - I thought I saw one briefly once before, but didn't have my book to make sure at the time.  Now it's on the list for sure.)
    • American Robin
    • Chipping Sparrow
    • Cardinal
    • Raven (I think?  I should have paid more attention.)

Back on April 11 we went to Mount Vernon with my now-ex-officemate to meet his mom & stepdad.  Of course I took a bunch of pictures even though it was raining then too.  Here are a few:

    Inside the crazy octo-barn.

Plum blossoms, according to Ben's mom.

    Wet rooster.

    Rainy river

Then the weekend after that I went birding at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center North Tract.  Some pictures below, more here on Picasa.  I can't find the bird list, but I did see an immature Bald Eagle and watched a Kingfisher (king)fishing.

This week we finished up the office (which we started right after Christmas, yikes).  More pics here if you really want to see it step-by-step.  Oh and we also painted the basement to make it slightly more tolerable for Carlos' new surround sound (which I totally complained about until he plugged it in and played 2 seconds of Transformers.  It's so cool!).

    Before

After (of course we need to put some more stuff back in, but you get the idea)

The walls are light gray, it's hard to get it right between the flash & the CFLs. I'll have to take some pictures during the day.

Finally, on Friday we saw Star Trek.  It was freaking sweet!!  But I don't know if I have the energy to watch like 20 seasons of TV shows, or 10 movies... so maybe I'll just watch this one over and over and pretend I am a Trekkie now.

    There's your super-rare update... enjoy ;)

  • Pour One Out For My Homies :'(

For the past two years I've shared an office with my friend Ben.  Tomorrow morning I have to pack up and move out.  I will have to leave two years of singing (that was all him, I sing like a tortured cat), discussing sci-fi TV shows, tea times, Family Guy quotes, complaining about society, baked goods, and Solstice Trees.  Ben introduced me to Journey and Bon Jovi and tried his best to get me to like the Beatles.  Sure, we can laugh about xkcd over IM, and we'll still have lunch together, but it won't be quite the same.

And then tomorrow night is the Galactica series finale, where I think they are going to kill everyone I like and leave only Gaius Frakking Baltar behind.

I am going to be pretty sad tomorrow :(

  • Should we get another cat??

Carlos and I went to Petsmart today to get Loki food, and as usual we ended up looking at the adoptable kitties. But this time an employee was there and started describing one of the cats to us. She's 8 or 9 months old, friendly, vocal, and loves to play with other cats. They said when she plays with other young boy cats she can push them around and has a lot of fun. She is adorable and her personality sounds perfect for our Loki.

So now the questions are (a) does Loki need a friend and (b) can we deal with the additional life hectic-ness that another cat would bring?

I think Loki would be fine with another cat, but I am not sure he needs one.  But he is alone 10+ hours a day during the week, and then we are sleeping for another 8-10.  So he only gets5-6 hours of attention from us each day.   And then we are usually cooking or cleaning or watching TV when we are home.  Maybe a little sister would keep him company and make him happy?

Another cat would mean more food, more litter, more attention, more fur (my whole family is allergic, and so is my best friend), more furniture scratching, and more cats sleeping on Kate at night.  If we don't pay enough attention to Loki now, will they really entertain each other or will we have two cats who want attention? What if Loki doesn't want a sister?  Would this really be better for him?  know it would take them some time to get used to each other, but what if they never get along?

But she was sooooooooo adorable, and sweet, and sounds like she'd play with Loki a lot...  We can't decide!!

What do you think?  If you have more than one cat, have you found it to be a good thing or a bad thing??

  • Hello Xanga and LJ friends, I have missed you all so much.  I feel so out of the loop.  The beginning of November through the end of January is always a mess for me, with a million birthdays and holidays, that is my only excuse.  So here's a recap of my past few months, with links to pictures.  I'll try to keep it as short as possible...

    Old Home Improvement
Last January we finished up the guest room (except for the door).  I put some pictures of it on Picasa and never told you about them, so here you go.

In September Carlos took a week off of work and replaced our roof.  We thought we could put this off for a few years, but over the summer the gutters came off because the wood behind them was completely rotted away.  He figured he might as well do the whole roof at once.  His dad and friend helped a lot, and my dad and I helped some too.  I have some pictures of before and after, and someday soon I'll add another of the whole roof with the new gutters and everything.  We added a tube skylight for our hallway and two real skylights for the living room, but right now the living room skylights are just brightening the attic (we haven't punched through the living room ceiling yet).

    October
Near the end of October Shilpa and I went up to Wilmington to visit our friend Violet.  One of the days it poured rain but the other day was lovely, and we went down to Brandywine Creek to walk around.  Of course I took pictures.

Then of course it was Halloween!  I went down to Alexandria with some friends because I wanted to go out but I can't deal with the Georgetown crowds.  I was Hermione again, but this time I had a real tie and a tiny Crookshanks.

    November
Now the mess starts!  In the first week of November, I had: birthday brunch at my Mom's on Sunday, birthday dinner with my Dad on Tuesday (and then election watching, which was awesome of course), and then a birthday backyard bonfire (BBB, if you will) on Saturday.

Late November brought a trip to the Shenandoah valley for a time share pitch because we are stupid and wanted free ski passes that we still haven't used.  At least we had fun driving together and I could take some pictures.

We had Thanksgiving dinner at our house for my Mom's family and Carlos' family (thank God we just got everyone to bring something, otherwise they would all have had to eat my cooking, the poor things).  Then it was down to the Cottage for Thanksgiving II with my Dad's family.

    December
In mid-December we were back at the Cottage for my Dad's mom's 90th birthday party.  It was a lot of fun and she seemed so happy.  I also thought I'd try out nighttime photography, because why do that in warm weather when you can risk frostbite instead?

Then was Christmas week, which I spent very congested and tired.  I didn't get my tree decorated until the Sunday before Christmas.  I saw some visiting-from-out-of-town high school friends on the 23rd, stayed up until midnight on Christmas Eve to open presents with Carlos' family, had Christmas breakfast at my Mom's and Christmas dinner at my Dad's.

My cousins were visiting during Christmas week, so I saw them a few times, including one night when we went to see the Mormon Temple Christmas lights (and my brother had his cute mini Dachshund over!).

We both took time off from Christmas Eve until just after the New Year to start redoing the office.  We haven't finished yet for various reasons but I am excited about how it will look, and it's pretty nice so far.  Before and after pics start here.

We had New Year's Eve dinner at an Indian restaurant with my cousins and then came home to work on the office, taking maybe 10 minutes off to watch the ball drop.  It's not possible to describe how exciting and glamorous our life is.

    January
Carlos' birthday was on January 4 so we had dinner at his parents' house.  In the middle of that night I got some evil cold/respiratory flu.  My body used the magic of congestion and sleeplessness to slowly convert a virus into a sinus infection, and I spent the entire week dying on the couch.  On the plus side, I watched the first season of Arrested Development (awesome), the first season of The Tudors (super boring, sorry), finished the second season of Psych (which I had already seen, but whatever), and watched some more Due South.

Somewhere in January we finally finished Loki's cat tree, which we started who knows how many months ago.  We brought it up to the living room and put it by the back door so he can watch the birds from it.  He goes nuts on that thing - I have a few pictures but I really need a video.  More pics here.

It's pretty big!  Carlos wrapped all that sisal rope himself.  We thought this would be cheaper than buying one this size but I am not sure it really was.

Loki likes to survey his kingdom from the top.

He also likes to hunt anything and anyone that comes near his tree.

Sometimes he hides in the tube

    Sometimes he's just weird.
Then my brother's and dad's birthdays were in late January, which of course meant dinner for each of them.  We went to Maggiano's in Friendship Heights the weekend before Inauguration Day, and of course it was packed.  They were hosting 700 middle schoolers up on the second floor, it was crazy.

Carlos spent a lot of January working at least 15 hours a day.  One night he was at work until 2:30AM.  This has continued into February and really sucks for him.

    February
On February 8 we had freakishly warm weather, so my friend and I went for a walk at Manassas Battlefield.  I took a bunch of pictures and even tried to improve some with Gimp.

That night Carlos was screwing down some subfloor in the office with an electric drill with a screwdriver tip.  It slipped off the screw and into his finger where it spun around in the bone for a bit until he could pull it out.  We spent a few hours in the ER getting it X-rayed and cleaned up while Carlos tried not to pass out.

A few days later I was sick again, with another cold/respiratory flu.  This time it hit me on a Thursday, so I worked from home that Friday (the 13th!) and recovered over the three day weekend.  I also ODed on Mucinex D (it makes my blood go really really fast whee!!) to avoid another sinus infection, and ODed on Nyquil to make sure I got sleep, so I wasn't nearly as sick as I was in January.  Unfortunately I gave it to my office mate/Manassas walking friend, and he just spent all of last week at home in bed.  Oops.

During my three-day-cold-recovery weekend was Valentine's Day.  I tell you every year that I hate it but I still can't ignore it completely.  Carlos and I (mostly Carlos) made this chicken tikka masala recipe he discovered recently.  We got frozen naan at Trader Joe's (sounds gross, tastes awesome) and had an Indian meal as good as any from a restaurant.  It helps that the sauce is made with heavy cream.  He got me a giant heart full of candy that I now regret requesting, and I got him strawberry gummy things and peanut butter cups from Trader Joe's.  We spent the evening channel surfing between Engaged and Underaged (which I hate with a violent passion) and The Transporter (which I dislike).  I had a cold and he had a hole in his finger.  So romantic <3.

Finally, last night my dad and I went out in the middle of the night to try to find Comet Lulin .  We went to the depths of the Poolesville wilderness, hoping for dark skies. We were horribly disappointed - I can't believe how bright it was out there! We spent most of the time hoping we wouldn't be arrested or assaulted as we stood on the side of the road in the middle of the night. It was 23 degrees out there. But using the half-remembered sky map in my mind, we found our comet. We couldn't see it with the naked eye, and even through the binoculars it wasn't green, but we were excited anyway!  I have some awful pictures of it if you are interested.

All caught up.  So much for keeping it short.  I will try to be good and catch up on the rest of you later.  I miss you all very much and I hope everything has been going well for you this winter!

  • I-Day Is Here!

Yayyyyy Inauguration!  It feels like Christmas!

So I know people would pay thousands of dollars to stay at my house this week.  And that this is a once-in-forever historical moment.  But as you can see from the fact that I am posting, I am not on the Mall.  I just knew I couldn't handle the crowd.  If a crowd is dense enough that I am touching other people 50% of the time, and big enough that I can't immediately get out, I get all claustrophobic.  That crowd on TV looks insane, and I wouldn't get out of the city for hours.  It gives me the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it.  Thus I am watching the inauguration in HD from my nice warm sofa (even better than being there, right?).  Don't worry, I'll be properly jealous of all of you that went down there when I see your pictures.

It's exciting just watching it on TV, too, even though nothing's really going on yet.  Seeing the crowd really makes you feel how important and amazing this is to so many people in our country.  I know he's just one man, I know our country is a wreck right now, and I know he can't fix it all by himself or quickly.  I know it will be hard, after this initial emotional rush, to motivate our set-in-its-ways population (I include myself in that assessment, of course).  But based on the influence he's having on our citizens right now, he just might be able to do it, with all of our help.

    So exciting

(Also crazy exciting but super depressing: Galactica is backtica.  But what the frak is going on??)

(Less exciting: water main break outside my house, we are losing water for the next hour or so.  That's what I get for working from home.)

Stay warm and safe if you are downtown, and enjoy your inauguration day, everyone!
